For Pete's Sake! A FREEBIE

I just can't seem to get enough Pete the Cat. I haven't even read any of the books I have! (They're in my classroom.) I have been inspired to create multiple things involving Pete and his awesome school shoes. I think my kids will have a great time!

I have made a Roll and Cover Games Pack for Back to School and Fall. You can check it out here:

BTS and Fall Themed Roll and Cover Games

This pack has 15 different game boards so there's plenty of variety to get you through Thanksgiving! I will be adding a Winter pack as well as a Spring pack soon. If you look at the cover you will see a certain little blue cat looking at you. YEP! I couldn't resist making some Pete gameboards to go along with the other themes. And now.....here's a FREEBIE!!!

These are played just like roll and cover, except the kiddos get to color the number they rolled instead of covering them up with a game marker. I like to send these little sheets home after the kids play the games so their parents can see what we've been doing.

Well....gotta go cook some fresh garden corn! YUM!!!

A Flash of Genius, or... Maybe I am a Little Late to the Party

Hey - just a quick thought I had a few weeks ago. I don't know about you, but I have bought so many awesome units from TpT and I forget what I have. So....I made a Teachers Pay Teachers picture menu. Maybe you've already thought of this, but I thought it was a great plan to help me see what I have. I am a visual person (hence the color coding and organization) so I copied and pasted the covers to all of my TpT units into various labeled pages so I could put them into my planning binder and they would be there when I am making my plans for each month/theme/unit/season, whatever....

Here's an example.

  Fun with Firsties! {Back to School for First Grade}

Go to your "Purchases" page on TpT and copy and paste each picture off your list into a document. This pic is on my "Back to School" page (I actually have 2 pages for this since I have found so much cool stuff.) I also added my units from TpT so I wouldn't forget what I have to use. I already have 29 pages of stuff in my menu. EGADS! Happy Organizing!

The Room's All Set - But What Do We Do With All of Those Kids????? Part 1

Warning! This post is REALLY loooooooong, so I'll throw in a FREEBIE if you can make it 'til the end...

Each year teachers work in their classrooms making them look inviting, colorful, homey, and special. We focus so much on the physical aspects of back to school that sometimes we stop and think - AHHHH! What about lesson plans? What am I gonna do with all of those kids when they get here? I am guilty of this as much as the next guy. Here's what I have planned for BTS (Back To School).

My littles will first put away any supplies that they brought and hang up their backpacks. On their desks will be some 1st day color pages to complete. I may also make the "magic playdough" if I have the time, energy, and the stars are aligned...Then, after announcements and the pledge I go through morning procedures.  - putting up their lunch choice as they come into the room, unpacking, turning in homework and/or notes/money, etc, hanging up backpack and putting their things into their cubbies. Next, we will come down to the rug for an ice breaker/get-to-know-each-other-activity (I haven't decided yet exactly which one.) Here are some I've done in the past - I Am, Who Is? (like I Have, Who Has but with names) M&M Chat (each kiddo gets a snack-sized bag of M&M's and each color corresponds to a question. I have a page up on the Pro-Board. We go around the circle and blindly pick out 1 M&M and answer the question off the board. Fun and you can't go wrong with chocolate!) The Name Game (you go around the circle and when it's your turn you say your name and all of the names of the people before you in the circle). This one is great for me, because by lunch I have all of the little darlin's names in my noggin!

Sometime we'll fill out our Time Capsule page. I started this last year and my class Loved it! They got to put their little papers inside our "time capsule" (actually a welding rod holder from Harbor Freight) and on the last day we opened that puppy up and read what we'd written on the first day of school. My kiddos were AMAZED at how much better their writing and spelling was. Some of them needed my help in deciphering what they had written back in August. Too funny!

Here's one of my every year things. The Classroom Quilt. Each student gets a paper quilt block to fill out and decorate. Then I take each block, punch holes in the edges and connect them all with yarn. Here's a pic from my website. Scroll down a little under the Back to School label: Classroom Quilt Pic

I've also bought a TON of stuff from awesome TpT sellers, such as the fabulous Cara Carroll's Ready Set Learn Back To School Math Literacy Activities. Also Reagan Tunstall's Back to School Math Centers. I am starting out with a little Pete the Cat, so yesterday I found this The Groovy Cat Math & Literacy Unit from First Grade Fever. Here are some pics of some of the Groovy Cat stuff I have printed and laminated thus far.

Ummm. I saved this right side up. ????
Anyhoo....this is a part of Groovy Cat.
It is a literacy station.

This is a pic of 2 of the math stations.
One is for practicing tally marks. The
other is counting and making
addition sentences.

There are a lot more things to print, but sadly I am almost out of colored ink and I only have 2 lamination pouches left. But not to worry. Mr. UPS will be bringing me a color cartridge and another
100 lamination pouches tomorrow! Happiness!

I have found a lot of neat things on Tpt, and I was able to get a lot of them for 20% off from the awesome teachers having a Christmas in July sale! SCORE! I can't wait until the BTS Sale on TpT. I've already got some things ready and waiting for that fantastic day!

Here's the FREEBIE I promised. This is the updated Classroom Quilt Block for this year!

Cupcake Addition and Lamination Land

I have just finished another set of Cupcake Games. This time it's Cupcake Addition. This set includes ELEVEN addition games for +1 all the way through +10, including doubles addition. Using this will give students TONS of addition fact practice so they can become fluent in their facts. As always, all you need to implement these activities in your classroom is a 12-cup cupcake tin for each set of games, pom poms and the printables from the pack. Print, laminate, cut and you're ready to roll! Here's what it looks like and a link to my store if you'd like to purchase.

Here's what a game looks like:

Kiddos put one set of cupcake cards into the cupcake
tin. Then they match the other set of cards. There
are also recording sheets for accountability.

I don't think I mentioned this in an earlier post, but I got myself a Scotch Thermal Laminator (ordered while on vacation). I finally broke that bad boy out and WOWZA! It is completely. AWE.SOME! Why didn't I get one before???? The lamination is far superior to our school's lamination. Last year I sent some game boards to be laminated and when I cut them apart the lamination peeled off! I kid you not! I sent them to be laminated again, and guess what happened? That's right. Peeled off. Again. So.....this year I will send big things to be laminated at school, but I will be using my little lovely at home for smaller items. Here is a scary picture of Lamination Land in my family room.

It's all fun and games until someone has to cut
everything out!

Well....after about 3 HOURS I had cut everything out. I have a nice little set of things ready for the first week of school. I don't know what it is about me, but I'm always wanting to change things up. There are very few things I do every year the same. I have some things I love to do with each year's class, but for the most part I change A LOT each year. My husband always says "Why? The kids won't know." True, but I'll know. I like to make things different. It keeps things fresh and exciting for me. I never want to be one of those teachers that get stuck in a rut.

For example, for the last 5 years I have had an incentive chart on our classroom door. Kids could earn scoops to put on ice cream cones. I have also had a display for each kiddo to have a reading chart to put stickers on when they read a book. This year I took down the display and put up the file folder pocket charts for writing in its place. Now my dilemma was where to go with the reading charts??? I thought and thought and thought. Hmmm....how about on our classroom door - so ice cream chart - GONE! (Well, it will be when I go back to work in my room.) I have also re-labeled about everything a person can re-label in a classroom. I make more work for myself, but I enjoy creating, so it's all good.

Number of the Day Pocket Chart Activity!!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

Just posted - Number of the Day Pocket Chart Activities!!!! I'm so excited about this packet of activities. They will work great for morning work, centers/stations, or whole group during your math workshop block. Every year I have kiddos that don't grasp number concepts. This will help them practice and master those skills!

Number of the Day Pocket Chart Activity

Go here to check it out in my TpT store: Number of the Day Pocket Chart Activity

The activity fits in a $1 Target Pocket Chart! The pack includes everything you need to do this with your own kiddos! All you need to do is print, laminate, cut and VOILA! You're ready to roll! I've just added a journal to print for your kiddos to show
their work in. I am going to print mine double-sided and 3-hole punched.
Then they will go in 3-pronged folders to keep them from ripping
apart so easily.

Here are some of the other cards that come in the pack.
I have picture cards to put up so students know what supplies you want them to use.
There are plenty of numbers to make about any number you can think of for K-2.

Until next time....
Jennifer

P.S. Here are some FREEBIE labels to put on your
3-prong folders for the Number of the Day journals.

So far I have Alphabet Match, Contractions, and Word Families. I have also bundled them into a set so you can get all 3 for less than buying them separately. Classroom Tour 2013-14 part 1

Hey bloggy friends! I have been feverishly working in my classroom getting everything ready before we're shut out for the week of stripping and waxing (I mean the hallways! Although I could use a little of that too! LOL!) Here are some photos from the week. I still have little odds and ends to do, but it's mostly done and I can breathe a sigh of relief!

Here is a peek into my first grade classroom for 2013-14!

Here's the view looking in from the doorway.

Here's the view looking to the right from the doorway.

Here's looking straight in from the doorway.

Same angle, wider shot.

Looking from the doorway again.

My **NEW** Listening "Spot"
Students will be able to go listen to a book on cd or tape and then
write a little about it on the listening station reflection sheet.
The best thing about this station?? I already had EVERYTHING you see there.
I just had to scrounge around my room.

My Work on Words Area.
Top - ABC Sound Boxes Go here to learn all about them.
Middle - Spelling and Word manipulatives (letter tiles, milk cap letters, bottle cap letters). Also, small puzzles (rhyming, vowels, ...)
Bottom - Pink drawer units hold sorts, puzzles, games, word building activities,
and word writing activities

My **NEW** File Folder Pocket Charts. I got these
from Mardel, but Wal Mart (of all places) has them in the back
to school section. They aren't pretty purple, but they'll work!
These pockets will hold writing papers/activities for Work on Writing.

I purchased an awesome bundle from Lori Rosenberg here:
It has EVERYTHING you could want and more! I am going
to add this to my station printables Writing Station Printables Pack
Each pocket will have a certain writing activity in it. I am going to put
little labels in the clear pockets to organize the papers and make a display
on the board behind and above the charts to show examples of the choices.

The view looking at the side of my desk, which I rarely, if ever, sit at.

One of my cubeicals purchases this summer. I am in the process
of cleaning out my desk drawers in an attempt to
transition to NO TEACHER DESK - GASP!
I don't use it much anyway. When I need to work on something,
I always sit at my small group table anyway.
We will be moving to our newly remodeled building
next year, so I am hanging on to my desk until
I know how things will be then.

Same pic again! Whoops! I guess I just needed
proof that it could be clean!

Another one of my awesome cubeicals.
This is in my small group area.

The top bins hold extra leveled books.

The first row of bins holds graphic organizers
and more leveled books.

The second row of bins holds beginning, middle
and end of the year ELA games.

The third row holds beginning, middle, and
end of the year math games.

The last row holds teaching resource books
organized by fall, winter and spring.

I'm working on getting rid of the visual clutter.
I have hauled a TON of stuff to my house.
Now it is full of visual clutter. Ugh!
Yet another summer project....

My small group area.
7-drawer Sterilite cart holds each group's books for the day.
The larger drawers hold materials (reading logs, dry erase
boards, and labels for books).

Next to the cart is my leveled reading cart. LOVE it!
Our 1st grade team was blessed to get these a few years
back. It's been wonderful. I have all of my
guided reading books organized by level, so during
group prep time I can just pull what I want, mark the
title on the students' sheets and put them in the drawers
for the next reading group time.

Double-sided rolling shelving units. These hold a lot!

The top has beginning of year literacy and math station
materials for my new little firsties!

The white units are my math drawers. Each holds
a math activity or game for stations time.

The bottom bins hold math manipulatives for games.

More math drawers and math manipulatives.

The top on this shelf holds (from left to right)
Creation Station (on Fridays I let each group
of kiddos spend a little time creating something
during stations time. I put odds and ends crafty
stuff in this carpenter's bag. It also has scrapbooking
scissors, twistable crayons, colored pencils, and envelopes.)

The gray hardware unit is my Word Family Station. Each
drawer has a different rime, plus foam letter tiles to create words
for each family. There is a recording sheet in the green (kitty litter) bin.
There is a link with the word families at my classroom website.

The white basket overflowing with papers is our scrap
paper stash. I let kids use this when they need to write
down a word for writing, or to make books during
literacy stations time. I've taught them to fold
several pages of the paper like a card and then put them inside
each other and staple the edge. It's a great way to re-use
old papers and the way it's folded only shows the clean
white side so kids can write and draw a story in their
own storybook! It's the ultimate Earth Day Everyday
Station!

Literacy Activity Crates

The pink crate holds magnets and cookie sheets.

The blue crate holds Can Do Games and
Shake and Search Bottles. (I am working on these
units to put on TpT. I'll let ya know when they're up!)

The green crate holds file folder games.

My newly labeled math manipulative bins! I got
tired of the boring old white labels that were 5
years old. It was time to spruce things up!

More of the math manipulative labels. I have 24 of these
bins full of all kinds of little things for math.

Here is a link to my FREEBIE labels:

My Author Study shelf. I have some new ideas
for this, but haven't landed on exactly what I
want to do and how I want it to look. For now, this is
what we have.

I have some of my favorite back to school stories ready
to go, along with the little plush characters.

On the left you can see Chester from "The Kissing Hand".

In the middle, you see Froggy.

On the right is a cool wooden perpetual calendar I found
in the $1 Spot at Target last year or the year before.

It's amazing what you find in your classroom
when you start going through every nook and cranny!
It was like Christmas, I tell ya!

Newly labeled pink storage tubs.
These hold all sorts of classroom supplies.
I have tubs for tissues, ziplocks,
ice cream bowls, paint cups and paint,
snacks, disinfecting wipes, crayons/markers,
and things for the treasure chest.

My awesome step! My husband built this for me
3 years ago. I painted it. It needs a little cleanin'!
It helps my littles reach the Promethean Board
so much easier. I also let our weekly Terrific Kid
pick 2 friends to sit on the step with them any
time we are on the rug for a story, or lessons.

My monthly teaching drawers. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them.
It keeps me so organized! You can use the above
link for the 2010-12 classroom tour to read all about
these awesome babies!
On top of the drawers are white Sterilite baskets
with nice, fresh, new labels (as of Friday!)
From left: celebrations (birthdays, lost tooth), copies
that have been made for upcoming lessons, papers
to file, and last - things to copy/laminate.

My new polka dot word wall. Right now
the headers are held on by magnets while
I wait to put sticky back magnets on them.
I think I want to cover the old, ugly chalkboard
with some pretty bright paper this year!

Under the word wall is part of  my classroom library.
I am in the process of re-doing this as well.
I have been revamping a lot this year. I was
ready for a change. I will post new pics as
soon as I have the labels on. I have them printed. I
just need to cut, laminate, and cut some more.
I'll give ya a hint. They came from

A little closer view.
